People have long been screaming to small businesses that websites are Important. But, never before has this proven true than in a global pandemic.
For many business owners, their website is the only reason their business has been able to survive. With quick changes happening for everyone in every arena, going to a brand’s website is equivalent to picking up the phone or walking through the door in 2020.
One of three things happened concerning small businesses and their websites as the world adjusted. They either had to make minor changes to communicate changes and updates, make major changes to an already out-of-date website, or they had to create a website. Whichever it was for your brand, one thing is true for us all. Websites are living spaces.
That means that we must always make time to care for our digital space. Here are a few habits to make to help you nurture your digital presence to ensure it’s always ready for business.
Regularly check links
A common mistake many of us make is that we figure since the website worked when we launched it, it all still works the same today. Unfortunately, technology isn’t always that cooperative. As a matter of fact, technology is often uncooperative. Make it a habit to go through every page and click everything! This is an especially good thing to before an event where you may be speaking or doing a large amount of networking.
Remember to update your contact information
In our personal lives, we send a mass text to those most important to us to say, “I have a new phone number. Lock me in!” In our business life, we may send emails to our contact to announce new contact information. We may even post the updates on our social media accounts. Most people, forget to change their Contact page, header, and/or footer. Make a small list of places to make contact updates and put it somewhere in or on your desk.
Add new projects and clients
As you continue to work hard and provide stellar service to customers and clients, don’t neglect to add that to your website. It’s far easier to link a potential client to your website rather than have to email a ton of links. Update your portfolio, case studies, or client logos with every opening or closing engagement, if applicable.
Update your bio
In a similar lane, you will want to remember to update that latest award, article, or achievement by updating your bio. More often than not, if a media outlet or anyone, for that matter, would like to highlight you, they will glean information from your website first. Update your bio as life happens and you will find it easier to direct people to when needed.
Refresh pictures
This last habit may seem unexpected. Consider refreshing Images on your website at least once a year. Sometimes all your website needs for a fresh look is updated images. When you review your pictures, you may realize you don’t show enough diversity in stock photos, or that you now have great pictures of your own and can switch from stock. Make a habit of refreshing images to help your brand stay on-trend with design and always reflective of current values.
Making these few habits a normal part of your business procedures will save you more time and trouble that you may realize when the time comes for visitors to get the information they need to engage your brand.
